How to clean dirty grout

by | May 2, 2018 | Tile and Grout Cleaning | 0 comments

So how do you get that dirty grout clean? Well first we have to determine if the grout has previously been sealed or not. And if it has, is the sealer still present? We can determine this by performing this simple test. Take a small amount of water and pour it into the grout lines. Watch how the grout responds to the water. If the water is quickly absorbed into the grout then the grout is in an unprotected state. If the water does not absorb into the grout, then the grout is still protected by a sealer. Grout that is sealed responds better to cleaning since dirt and grease is not able to penetrate the grout. Most grout is soiled with household oils and dirt. This type of soil can be effectively cleaned with a degreaser. There are many degreasers that are available to home owners. One that all should be very familiar with is dish detergent. Follow the following steps using dish detergent to get that dirty grout clean again.

  1. Make a solution using 1/2 cup of dish detergent and 1 gallon of water. For extra strength you can boost the solution with 1 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide.
  2. Saturate the floor with the solution and let it dwell for 15 minutes. This allows the solution to emulsify the soils.
  3. Agitate the grout lines with a stiff bristle brush.
  4. Remove solution using a sponge.
  5. Use clear water to rinse the grout.
  6. Repeat steps 1 thru 5 until grout is cleaned as desired.
  7. Allow grout to dry.
  8. Apply penetrating sealer according to instructions on label.
  9. If all above fails (including motivation) – contact a professional for a free estimate!

This company is so good and personable, we almost want to keep breaking stuff so they'll come back. They helped us redesign our small farmhouse
I needed my hot water heater replaced. Thomas did an excellent job. He was very knowledgeable and completed the job in a timely manner. He reviewed a few other home repairs that concerned me and I was so impressed with how knowledgeable he was that we scheduled more home improvements for the near future. Highly recommend!
We utilized their services after we got a new puppy. The servicemen were fast and friendly. They got the odor out of my carpet on the first visit. Would definitely used this service again
Great service! Reliable, skilled and polite!
The stain removal and polishing of my marble countertops looks great!
The Revitalize team did a FANTASTIC job cleaning and sealing the tile in our bathrooms! We have extremely hard water which leaves rust stains no matter how we try to keep salt in that softener! They said they might not be able to remove all of the discoloration but they would give it their all and they sure did! Our tile looks so fresh and new! I just couldn't be happier with Revitalize! Every member of their team worked to make a very happy customer!
We have had Revitalize Home Services clean carpets, deep clean tile, and, most recently, they did 2 bathroom renovations for us. We absolutely love our new subway tile showers, and our bathrooms look beautiful. It was solid, quality work. They cleaned up every evening and were great communicators throughout the project! We will definitely use them again in the future!
I called these guys because of the rave reviews I saw here and now I want to add mine to them. They are professional, knowledgeable, and conscientious about doing a good job. If you don't know a lot about home repairs and maintenance, these are your guys. You can trust them and learn a lot by talking to them while they work. Their fees are very fair and as someone said here, they really are the nicest guys on the planet.
